Business and economy in Leipzig

Leipzig’s development has always been driven by the initiative, vigour and creativity of its citizens. Here where Europe’s major traffic and trade routes intersected, the world’s first trade fairs were held in the 12th century. During the second half of the 19th century, the foundation of enterprises and the extension of traffic routes made Leipzig one of the pioneers of the Industrial Revolution in Germany.
Still today, initiative and entrepreneurial spirit are a fertile soil for major investments. This has attracted well-known brands such as Porsche, BMW, or DHL. Highly qualified labour force and a strong innovative potential form the basis of a dynamic development. Besides traditionally rooted industries like electronics, chemical industry, mechanical engineering, printing and publishing, more and more service companies are settling in the Greater Leipzig Area.

With its strategy of economic development, the City of Leipzig focuses on certain sectors that have a strong potential for the future. Under the headline ‘Strengthen the Strengths’, high-potential sectors are given particular support. Five clusters have been identified and are being promoted:
- Logistics and Services
- Automotive and Supplying Industries
- Health Industry and Biotechnology
- Energy and Environment
- Media and Creative Businesses
