Culture, lifestyle and tourism in Leipzig
Leipzig’s trade fairs which date back to 1265, and the University which was founded in 1409, are the roots of the city’s liberal, open-minded, tolerant and hospitable spirit. This spirit is also the soil on which grew the ‘Peaceful Revolution’ of 1989 which has changed the world.
Leipzig owes its fame as a city of culture and the arts to the commitment of its citizens who, throughout the centuries, promoted artists, collected paintings, sponsored museums, and founded the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra.
Only few cities look back on such a rich musical tradition as Leipzig. Johann Sebastian Bach worked here as St. Thomas’ choirmaster from 1723 to 1750. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s house invites you to visit. The story of Robert and Clara Schumann is inseparably linked with Leipzig; Richard Wagner was born in Leipzig in 1813. The famous St. Thomas Choir looks back on 800 years of history and performs at St. Thomas Church, the authentic place of Bach.
Those interested in literature can walk in the footsteps of Goethe, Schiller, Lessing or Nietzsche. Those who love painting and sculpture can discover the collections of the Fine Arts Museum, or familiarise themselves with the 'Leipzig School' avant-garde in the Museum of Contemporary Art, and in the alternative art galleries located in the former cotton mill district ‘Spinnerei’.
Leipzig offers quite a wealth of activities, including visits to theatres, concert halls, cabarets and shows. In the lively old-town district, more than 1,200 restaurants, pubs and cafés invite visitors to relax and enjoy. Interests are quite varied: there are those who like to stroll through the elegant turn-of-the-century galleries around the historic Market Square, while others like to mix with students and young people in the hip and trendy alternative quarters.
More than 120 hectares of forests and parks, golf courses, rivers and canals in the city and lakes to the south, offer a large variety of recreational opportunities.
